The Pursuit of Happiness ...


May 15, 1776 the US Congress or whatever it comprised of then, passed a resolution. A resolution that would change civilization, that would change peoples destiny and that would make America into a formidable world power. This was the Decleration of Independence.

''We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.''

What is this independance that the civilised world protects? That we are so proud of? That however sprawling our slums and dirty our cities corrupt our politics and unhappy our neigbourhoods, we still so haughtily proclaim?

My questions are more for personal introspection than for debate. To me the last few words of the statement are most appealing. ''.. the pursuit of happiness .'' When i come to think of it ... what is whatever i am doing actually for ... isn't it, for happiness?

Isn't happiness about how much money you have, your lifestyle, your car, your house, your loved ones? Or is it about volunteering in the war zones or where theres poverty, illiteracy, unemployment and sheer destitution . Or it simply is going through your mundane life each day. The answers are for each individual to decide.

I don't think i have decided yet. But the liberty of choice is again my unalienable right.
Presently i would relish an assortment. I wouldn't want to be blindingly greedy nor miserably poor. It would give me greater happiness to give than to receive.
For now I will pursue a successful career not forgeting the world in need doing each day the little i can, till i am prepared to do my best, in order to fulfill my pursuit, the pursuit of happiness...
